In the pre-internet age libraries were the main repositories of all human knowledge. If you wanted to find the answer to something that you couldn't ask your parents, friends, teachers, neighbours, the postman - either because you were too embarrassed to ask or because you instinctively recognised that they would be too stupid to know - then there really was only one other place you could go.
